Welcome  to our Website!  Check out the details of our team , our events and how you can join us!

Team Babci will be participating in an amazing event again in 2011. We will be walking in the Multiple Sclerosis Challenge Walk for the fifth year this September. Team Babci (“Miles for Smiles”) will partake in a 3 day, 50 Mile walk on Cape Cod on September 9-11, 2011 to raise funds for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society as well as increase awareness about the illness of Multiple Sclerosis.

Team Babci is a group of family and friends committed to raising money and awareness about Multiple Sclerosis. As one of the founding members of this team, with my father Dan and friend Melissa Cassel,  Team Babci – and our participation in this walk , is a way for us to do what we can to support my mother  – and all the heroes out there who live with Multiple Sclerosis every day.

As you may be aware, Multiple Sclerosis is an illness that is personal to me. My mother, Diane, was diagnosed with MS about 9 years ago, though it is likely she had symptoms many years before that. She is fortunate to be in generally good health and as always, maintains such a positive and upbeat attitude about her illness, her life and of course her beautiful grandchildren! The form of MS which she has is one that has been reasonably managed with some medication.

Over the past year, though, it is fair to say that certain things have become more of a challenge for her.  It is a progressive illness so mobility is a bit trickier as well as the fatigue and side effects from the medications that she is taking. It is heart breaking at times to know that in spite of the fact that she complains rarely about her discomfort, she has a more difficult time doing things that you and I may take for granted.

Multiple Sclerosis is a progressive autoimmune disease which affects the nervous system and for which there is currently no cure. Great strides have been made forward with the treatment of the progression of this illness but there is still much that is not known about this disease A surprising face is that someone is diagnose with MS about every hour and that it often strikes people in the prime of their lives.

The opportunity to complete this walk will certainly be a challenge to our team but people with Multiple Sclerosis often face far greater challenges each and every day. The ability to get out of bed, care for children or walk for a few hours can be an impossibility for many. Others struggle with vision problems, poor coordination and unpredictability in terms of how they may be able to function day to day.

After completing this walk the past four years I can tell you that it is a moving, emotional experience and I am honored to be a part of it again!

So consider what you can do to help us get closer to a cure!
